Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a grand word that is a way of saying  one book (or painting or poem … or piece of music) is making reference to another book or poem or painting or piece of music.

Because Diane likes seeing how writing and video and art all intersect, I wrote a PhD thesis about it. You can find her thesis in the MONA library in Berriedale, Lutruwita.

We also had fun playing around in The Time Virus and Time Wizard by referring to characters and places and things in other writing or art or music as if they are real (like when Gandalf comes into the books so as to make it seem that everything in the Lord of Rings series happened in real life). Or, other times, we just mention a poem or a place in a book, but it’s still a form of intertextuality.

There’s also a lot of music in the series of books. The music and the lyrics sort of pervade the writing.

Diane has written more on her poetry/academic writing website overthere.com.au and here’s a bit more on intertextuality from that site.
